Recommended Reading for Co-Parents
and Others Going Through Divorce

Shonnie Brown, MFT

I am putting together a list of books which have proven helpful to many people--my clients, COPE participants and reviewers on Amazon.com. The brief quotes below are from people who have read and highly recommend the following books:

Divorce Poison: Protecting the Parent-Child Bond from a Vindictive Ex
by Richard A. Warshak
This book stood out from the dozens I looked over on Amazon.com. There were 39 outstanding reviews on a subject that is possibly the most hurtful and harmful by-product of many co-parenting situations... Check out Dr. Warshak's home page, research on Parental Alienation Syndrome, and an excellent list of recommended reading at http://www.richardwarshak.com

Reviewer: "Divorce Poison" by Dr. Richard Warshak is an absolute must buy! I can say from personal experience that this book is priceless if you have a vindictive ex who uses the children to hurt you during and after a divorce... What makes this book so valuable is that Dr. Warshak takes each alienation example and then gives you a TAKE ACTION assignment on how to best combat the attempts by your ex.

From Ex-Wife to Exceptional Life: A Woman's Journey through Divorce
by Donna Ferber
Reviewer: Women going through any stage of divorce will find that this book is one they will want to use on a daily basis. Every topic I had questions about was addressed. I found it easy to read one day at a time, but the index makes it possible to address any topic on any given day.

Getting Up, Getting Over, Getting On: A Twelve Step Guide to Divorce Recovery
by Micki McWade
Reviewer: "Micki McWade succintly captures the 12 step philosophy while providing a practical yet spiritual path to recovery for those going through divorce. Throughout this book, you will find prayers, inspirational quotes, a deep understanding of the issues at hand and an immense helping of encouragement."

Surviving Separation and Divorce
by Loriann Hoff Oberlin
Reviewer: "Last week my husband came home and out of the blue announced he was leaving me. I was shocked, devastated, angry, hurt--you name it. I read this book in two days and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm in for a rough time ahead but I know that in the long run my life will be so much happier!"
